Taoiseach Opens Mullingar to Garrycastle Section

October 18, 2015

The national Galway to Dublin Cycleway project enjoyed a gala day on 18 October when the 40km section between Mullingar and Garrycastle, Athlone, was formally opened by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny.  This sector of the route follows an old railway line. The opening ceremony took place at the railway station in Moate, Co. Westmeath, and was attended by a crowd of several hundred people. Moate Action Group organised ‘Moate Bike Fest’ to mark the occasion. Some of the festival riders came in fancy dress and others on vintage bicycles. Council Chairman Paul Daly said the opening was an exciting day for Westmeath.  Chief Executive Pat Gallagher described the newly opened section as an important link in the proposed national route between Galway and Dublin. The Taoiseach spoke about the importance of the cycleway project to communities and, reciprocally, the importance of communities driving such projects from the ground up.
